Bill of Rights

2021

Made in collaboration with director Trisha Gum, the Obamas, and Netflix, “Bill of Rights” is another BUCK-designed episode in a Schoolhouse Rock-inspired musical anthology series from Chris Nee and Kenya Barris entitled We The People that aims to give a civics crash course to a nation that thinks the filibuster is a topping at Cinnabon.

We wanted to create a direct connection between the rights the US Founding Fathers laid out and how they are experienced in modern life.

In order to draw that connection, we used paper not just as a medium but as the metaphorical embodiment of the abstract concept of “speech.”

1. History Remixed

The fight over the interpretation of rights established at the founding of the US continues to
this day. To highlight important milestones in the evolution of our rights, we used imagery from different time periods to show how the past is in dialogue with the present and the future.

2. The Power of Paper

We love the immediacy and expressiveness of paper as a medium. It’s tactile, handmade, and democratic in nature. Paper has allowed citizens to communicate, educate, and fight for their rights.

There's an exciting energy at the intersection of poster art, protest art, and street art — and that's right where we wanted to be. We love how posters in the wild seem to be in dialogue with each other. That’s a nice thematic refrain for how we are in dialogue with the Founders through the reading and interpretation of the Constitution.

3. Breaking Free From The Page

Each of the characters above represents an important historical moment, from women’s suffrage to the fight for civil rights.

We were lucky to be chosen for this incredible project and absolutely loved the creative process that allowed us to play and get inventive. We experimented with stop-motion (both analog and digital), hyper-lapse, and time-lapse in order to create this handmade, staccato-paced aesthetic.
