We took Portal’s 2D illustration system (designed by yours truly) and transformed it into their first 3D animated spot to highlight the ways Portal keeps loved ones connected — especially during these difficult times.
Initially, they wanted to do a live-action shoot. But Covid restrictions scrambled those plans so we came up with this filmic, 3D approach.
The story was a day in the life of our characters, highlighting the many different ways you can use Portal. In order to be economical in our storytelling, we used motion, wardrobe, and sets as a way to help bring our characters to life.
We strived to develop an ownable look — opening the door for Facebook to continue to develop this 3D Portal universe in future campaigns.
Our primary inspiration on this job came from some of our earlier work — specifically, Share Your Gifts and Tinder. Each new opportunity we have to play in a 3D world is a chance for us to continue to develop and refine our CG skills.
