Ray-Ban Stories

2022

Ray-Ban coupled its iconic style with cutting-edge technology that allows wearers to capture, share, and listen to media in a lightweight, user-friendly product: Ray-Ban Stories.

For this monster project, we scripted 8 minutes of video, shot a live action conversation (in the depths of COVID) between Rocco Basilico of Ray-Ban and Mark Zuckerberg, crafted 3 creator-focused featurettes, built a full graphics package (including CG product shots), developed the UI for the Facebook View companion app, and—because that’s not enough—crafted a very cool AR filter and social films to promote it.

Okay, let’s dive in…

A casual chat between friends

It was weirdly intimidating to write words that Mark Zuckerberg would utter on camera. But we did it. In fact, we scripted the entire launch video from start to finish, working closely with Ray-Ban and Facebook to get every syllable right.

Nailing the details

Because we were helping to launch a real product, we had to get the details of our 3D models and renders absolutely perfect. And we had to do that across a matrix of styles, color combinations, and lens options.

Our goal: To get at least one “che bello!” from the discerning team of Italian designers at Ray-Ban.

(We got more than one.)

A flexible graphics toolkit

The glue that holds everything together in the product launch video is a handsome graphics system.
Using Ray-Ban’s signature red and channeling their abundance of cool, we created a bold motion language that works across every common format for every social media channel, including 16x9, 9x16, and center cut.

A side of UI, please

We’re no strangers to UI design, so we leapt at the chance to design the interface for Facebook View, the companion app created for Ray-Ban Stories.

The app features a clean library, editing features, and of course the ability to share across the Facebook ecosystem.

Ready for your close up

Being able to virtually try on Ray-Ban Stories via an Instagram AR filter was a no-brainer. But actually pulling it off was a feat of clever tech wizardry.

We had to keep our filter’s file size very small. Like lilliputian small. So we ended up creating a custom font that looked like the concentric ring effect from the Ray-Ban Stories marketing campaign.

We then extruded the text using our bespoke font and voila!—magical rings at a fraction of the file size. To promote the AR filter, we also created social videos showing it in action.
